Makos range worldwide and can show up just about anywhere at any time. For consistent action the waters off Southern California near Oxnard are tops. So says Captain Mike Schmidt (818.262.6022) who has seen Makos he believes are in the all-tackle record class of 1,500 pounds. “We have Makos year-round, but in the warm months big fish are here for spawning and pupping, and we get some great fishing for heavy Makos, “Schmidt says. “For Makos, we target underwater mountain peaks and drop-offs 20 to 50 miles offshore, sometimes near 5,000 feet of water. We see Makos of all sizes, but some are gigantic. Chumming and fishing with tuna heads are productive for Makos, but Schmidt says the huge sharks are wary. He likes high tides in late afternoon and prefers fishing wherever bait is abundant.
